Colesberg and Philippolis are approximately halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town. It is the ideal stop over place when travelling between Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Colesberg is close to the van der Kloof dam and the Doornkloof Nature Reserve with kudu, brown hyena, mountain Reedbuck, steenbuck, grey duiker, bat-eared fox, aardvark and aardwolf. The Information office can arrange walking tours of the town on request. When you embark on one of these tours, you will see many of the original buildings of Colesberg showing very fine
Philippolis (on old national road, R717, between Colesberg and Trompsburg), is in the centre of the country. It is an ideal stop over, 630km from Johannesburg, 800 km from Cape Town, 470 km from PE) The deviation off the N1 highway (from Colesberg to Trompsburg) is in fact shorter than the actual N1 (and without trucks). It is also a lovely village for those who want to escape from the city for a few days.
